From Toothaches to Infections or Abscesses

What is a dental emergency?

A dental emergency is any issue that causes severe pain, bleeding, infection, or loss of a tooth. If you’re unsure whether your situation requires immediate care, ask yourself:

  • Am I experiencing severe tooth pain or inflammation that won’t go away?
  • Do I have swelling, pus or abscess-like symptoms?
  • Have I suffered a knocked-out tooth or a broken tooth?
  • Is my gum disease causing bleeding gums or oral pain?
  • Do I have a lost filling, chipped crown, or broken dentures?
  • Is my tooth sensitivity worsening, making it difficult to eat or drink?

If you answered yes to any of these questions, contact our office right away for an emergency appointment.

Broken, Chipped, or Aching? We Treat It All

Common Dental Emergencies We Treat

Severe Tooth Pain & Toothaches – Often caused by decay, infection, or gum disease. Treatment options may include root canal therapy, periodontal treatment, or oral surgery.

Chipped, Cracked, or Broken Teeth – We restore damaged teeth with dental crowns, composite resin fillings, or dental implants if the tooth cannot be saved.

Knocked-Out Teeth – If you act quickly, we may be able to treat knocked-out teeth and save the natural tooth. In some cases, we may recommend dental implants or a dental bridge for permanent restoration.

Lost Fillings & Broken Crowns – We replace lost fillings or replace chipped crowns to protect the tooth from further damage.

Swollen Gums & Gum Infections – Gum disease treatment, also known as periodontal treatment or therapy, can help reduce infection and protect your oral and heart health, and help you keep your teeth for years to come.

Broken Dentures or Partial Dentures – If your dentures break, we can repair or replace them to restore function and comfort.

Soft Tissue Injuries & Oral Bleeding – We provide immediate care for oral injuries affecting the gums, tongue, and cheeks.

Don’t Panic

What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you’re facing a dental emergency, follow these steps to minimize damage and pain until you can see a local emergency dentist:

  • Severe Tooth Pain, Swelling or Infection: Rinse with warm water to remove debris, and use a cold compress to reduce swelling. If swelling is compromising your ability to breathe, contact your local emergency department.
  • Chipped or Broken Tooth – Rinse your mouth and use dental wax to cover sharp edges. Seek emergency dental care to prevent further breakage. Avoid hard food to prevent fractures from becoming worse.
  • Oral Injury or Knocked-Out Tooth – Apply gentle pressure with a small piece of gauze or clean cloth. If bleeding is severe, contact a local emergency department. If a tooth is knocked out, hold the tooth by the crown, rinse gently, and place it in milk or a tooth preservation kit and bring it with you to your appointment ASAP.
  • Bleeding Gums: Brush debris off your teeth and swish with warm water after meals until you are able to come see your dentist.
  • Lost Filling or Crown: Avoid chewing in that area and keep it clean by brushing. Use dental wax as a temporary fix, and schedule an appointment for a dental restoration.

Preventing Dental Emergencies

While some dental emergencies are unavoidable, many can be prevented with good oral hygiene and routine dental care. To protect your dental health, we recommend:

Flossing daily and using desensitizing toothpaste to prevent tooth sensitivity.

Wearing a nightguard if you have teeth grinding or sensitive teeth.

Avoiding hard or sticky foods that can cause chipped teeth or lost fillings.

Keeping up with routine checkups to detect problems early and prevent major dental pain.

Restorative Healing

Emergency Dental Treatment & Recovery

At The Dental Team, we focus on fast pain relief and long-term solutions. Depending on the severity of your dental emergency, treatment may include:

  • Root canal therapy to remove infection and save the tooth.
  • Oral surgery or extractions to remove any unsalvagable teeth and treat infections
  • Dental crowns or composite resin fillings to restore cracked teeth or lost fillings.
  • Gum disease treatment to reduce bleeding gums and prevent complications.
  • Dental implants for knocked-out teeth that cannot be saved

Most patients experience relief within a few hours to a few days, depending on the treatment method. We provide personalized aftercare instructions to ensure a smooth recovery.

Emergency Dental Frequently Asked Questions

While a local emergency room can provide pain medication and antibiotics for oral infections, they typically do not offer dental restorations or permanent solutions to treat cracked teeth or tooth pain. If you have a knocked-out tooth, lost filling, or cracked tooth, it’s best to see a trusted emergency dentist as soon as possible for immediate care.

To treat tooth sensitivity, avoid sweet foods, cold drinks, and acidic foods that can worsen discomfort. Try using a desensitizing toothpaste, and if pain persists, schedule an appointment for a dental exam. Sensitivity may indicate gum disease, a cracked tooth, or tooth decay, all of which require professional treatment.

If you lose a filling, you can temporarily cover the tooth with dental wax to protect it from further damage. However, this is not a permanent fix. A same-day appointment with an emergency dentist is recommended to replace the filling with a composite resin or dental crown for long-term protection.

To prevent dental emergencies, follow these tips:

  • Floss daily and brush twice a day to maintain good dental health
  • Use a nightguard if you have teeth grinding to prevent cracked teeth
  • Avoid chewing on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candy
  • Wear a mouthguard for sports to prevent oral injuries
  • Keep up with routine dental care to catch small issues before they become major problems

If you have persistent tooth pain, or swelling, you may need root canal therapy to remove an infection and save your natural tooth. Delaying treatment can lead to more severe pain, abscesses, and even tooth loss, so it’s important to seek urgent dental care if you notice these symptoms.
